I spent 30 years on the hiring side of graduate recruitment – reading CVs, conducting interviews and making the decisions that determined who got the job.
I built my company Step Ahead into an award-winning recruitment and employability business. Get Hired Expert is where I share everything I learned from that side of the table. Not career theory. Not generic advice. The inside knowledge that actually changes outcomes.

"Jackie's coaching was invaluable as it gave me the confidence in myself that enabled me to go into the interview prepared and a lot less anxious than I would have been. Without her help I would have really struggled at the interview but instead I got the job that I had really wanted."
– Kristina Harper
"Thanks to Jackie's support and career advice, I was able to gain hands-on experience that has had a real impact on my confidence and career progression. Jackie Bedford – Get Hired Expert, Founder of Step Ahead & 30 years in recruitment
The questions running through every graduate's head the night before. Answered directly by someone who spent 30 years on the other side of the table.
More than most candidates realise. Whether you seem like someone they could work with. Whether you appear to understand the role. Whether you come across as prepared or just hoping it goes well. The rest of the interview confirms or corrects that first impression, it rarely reverses it entirely. Preparation is not about scripts. It is about showing up with clarity.
Rambling usually happens because the answer has not been thought through before the interview. The fix is preparation, not performance. Use a simple structure: one sentence to state the point, two or three sentences to back it up with a specific example, one sentence too close. Practise answering common questions out loud before the interview. You will hear immediately when you are going round in circles.
Fair question. I am not a career coach who read about interviews in a textbook. I spent 30 years on the other side of the hiring table – reading CVs, conducting interviews and making the decisions that determined who got the job and who did not. I have seen every version of interview preparation, good and bad, from the side that actually matters. I built my company Step Ahead into an award-winning recruitment and employability business and I have helped thousands of people into work across that time. Get Hired Expert exists because I got tired of watching capable people fail interviews for entirely fixable reasons. Everything in this guide is what I wish every candidate had known before they walked in.
No guide can guarantee that – and anyone who says otherwise is not being straight with you. What this guide does is give you the best possible chance. It walks you through 10 areas that every strong graduate candidate has covered before they walk in – from understanding what interviewers are actually deciding, to preparing your key stories, mastering the STAR technique, handling the questions you will definitely be asked, and knowing exactly what to do after the interview. Cover all 10 and you will walk in with clarity and confidence. What you do with that is up to you.
